On a geeky note, I remember browsing for ASCII pictures back when I interned at Cal State Fullerton in 1994. I used gopher to get to Yet Another Hierarchically Organized Oracle. I used a loaned 286 with an orange monochrome screen. I used a 2400 baud modem. I logged on a VAX system.

Those were the days.
I used to live in Galveston, which was recently hit hard by Hurricane Ike. My friends' families houses were either obliterated or damaged extensively.

Keeping this in mind, ironically, Galveston will be one of two sites in the United States which will be home to all of the world's deadliest pathogens and viruses.

What were they thinking?

In other academic news (to me), I read (skimmed over) this article and scratched my head, only to discover that it's one of the world's greatest scientific hoaxes.

What a tremendous F U to the scientific community. How awesome is that?
